Information

Kaizen Dale was chosen to design a groundbreaking National Environmental Report.

Natural England, Government Adviser for the natural environment in England and an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, selected Kaizen Dale as their design and communication partner for the launch of their ground-breaking State of Natural Capital, SONC, report.

The report is the first evidence based, systematic resource designed specifically to help policy makers understand the impact of key change drivers on England’s natural systems – from forest to farmland and from city centre green spaces to seabed - and on the benefits they deliver to society and the economy. We were tasked with a total graphic interpretation and design package for the report, alongside key message development and articulation and creation of launch assets.

Influence

The result had to be much more than another report. It needed to become a source of real influence.

Natural England had a very clear agenda for the SONC report. They wanted to build on deep data and complex-interrelated systems overviews. They needed to create an accessible and practical resource, informing and influencing decision makers in key areas of government policy, infrastructure and urban development, industrial planning and other activities directly affecting the natural environment.

Kaizen Dale helped make the crucial shift from information to influence by creating a palette of engaging visuals, accessible and attractive to a range of audiences. It was critical to differentiate SONC positively as not just another typical report. Natural England wanted to create a true resource. One that would live on as a sustained source of policy influence with a clear central message: ‘consider the potential effects on our vital, and already hard-pressed, natural systems when you plan or review any activity that may impact them.

Impact

A fully accessible communication package designed for impact.

We quickly navigated the steep learning curve of the natural capital sector, transforming data into informative and accessible visualisations that adhere to all relevant standards for diverse audience needs. Our design approach was holistic, applying not just to the core SONC report, but creating impactful ways into the information through video, social media, sector and profile-specific slide decks, executive summaries and support materials for a high-profile launch event.

We were delighted to work with Natural England on innovative communication of issues that impact all of us. As an agency, we have a long tradition of collaboration with clients who are agents of positive change through environmental sustainability programmes. It was energising to have a unique opportunity to apply our own experience and passion to such a significant project. And we look forward to SONC’s ongoing positive impact.
